About Us

Mission Statement

The Museum of the Albemarle promotes the understanding of history and material culture primarily of the Albemarle Region in which it is located and secondarily for the state of North Carolina for the educational benefit of all people. Through regional collections, historical interpretation, and professional assistance, the museum encourages citizens and visitors to explore and understand the past; to reflect on their own lives and their place in history; and to preserve regional history for future generations.

Tuesday-Saturday, 9 am - 5 pm; Sunday, 2 pm - 5 pm
Closed major state holidays

Directions

The Museum of the Albemarle is located at 501 S. Water Street in Elizabeth City, NC on the banks of the Pasquotank River. It is an approximate 1 hour drive from Norfolk, Virginia and 1 hour from the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

From Norfolk, VA: I-464 South to US 17. Continue south on US 17 to Elizabeth City, NC where the highway will become US 17/158. Continue to follow US 158 East. Turn right on US 158 E/Elizabeth Street. Continue to Water Street. Turn right. Museum is located four blocks on the right at corner of Water and Ehringhaus Street.

From Outer Banks: US 158 West to Elizabeth City. Upon crossing the Pasquotank River, turn left onto Water Street. Museum is located four blocks on the right at corner of Water and Ehringhaus Street.

From Raleigh: US 64 East to Williamston. US 17 North to Elizabeth City. At the juncture of US 17 and US 17 Business, take the right fork onto US 17 Business/Ehringhaus Street. Travel approximately 2 miles until Ehringhaus Street intersects with Water Street. Museum located on right.

Museum Shop

The Museum Shop offers merchandise reflecting the museum's collection as well as items helping to tell the story of the Albemarle region. Beautiful handmade craft items such as pottery and glass, a variety of regional books, distinctive and educational toys, souvenirs, and special gifts, many with a nautical flair can be found. Delores Spencer, the  Museum Shop Manager  is constantly updating its stock with new and exciting merchandise that warrants a stop each time you visit the Museum.
