Welcome
Located in Elizabeth City,
NC, the Museum of the Albemarle is the northeastern regional
branch of the North Carolina Museum of History. Serving
thirteen counties in northeastern North Carolina, the Museum
allows visitors to explore the history of the oldest section
of North Carolina, many times considered the birthplace of
English America.
Having opened in its new facility on
the Elizabeth City waterfront in April, 2006, the main
exhibit entitled “Our Story” in the Madrin Gallery is
finally coming together! Work is in progress for a total
renovation of the space. There are over 700 artifacts that
will be displayed in the newly renovated gallery, bringing
many of the items out of protective storage to be put on
display. The Jackson House and the Proctor Smokehouse will
remain as anchors to the gallery, but there will be much
more for the public to experience.
Over $1.5 million was raised by a
capital campaign over a 3-year period to fund the
construction of “Our Story.” The Madrin Gallery will open to the public on Saturday, May 10 at 9:00 am! Join us for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 9:15!
The Discovery Room featuring many “hands-on” history
displays and interactives for families is now open. In addition, the
Museum will continue with its educational programs scheduled
through the year
During the renovation of the Madrin
Gallery, visitors will not be disappointed and are invited
to visit featured exhibits within the lobby and classrooms.
