Accessibility for Visitors
Making all visitors feel welcome
The Museum of the Albemarle welcomes ALL visitors to discover the past; to reflect on their own lives and their place in history; and to preserve state, regional, and local history for future generations.

Visitors with mobility disabilities
Accessibility
Handicap accessible entrance and parking are in front of the Museum.
Exterior Access Ramps
Currently, the Museum has a wheelchair-accessible ramp located to the left-hand side of the main steps to the building.
Wheelchair Rentals
Manual wheelchairs are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis while visiting the Museum.
During Visit
Accessible seating is available in the Auditorium.
Benches are located throughout the Museum exhibits.
Getting around the museum
Elevator Accessibility
All levels of the Museum are accessible by elevator, including exhibition spaces and all public facilities.
Accessible Restrooms
Accessible restrooms are located on the first and second floor behind the Visitors Elevator of the Museum and across from the Auditorium on the first floor. All restrooms and water fountains are wheelchair accessible.
Nursing Room
The Museum's private nursing room, located within the women's restroom on the first floor behind the Visitor Elevator, is wheelchair accessible. This room is meant for single-use only and includes a cushioned chair with arms, two small tables, a locking door, and an electrical outlet. A key must be requested at the lobby floor Reception Desk before using.
Things to Know Before You Go
Service Dogs are Welcome
Museum of the Albemarle follows the US Department of Justice’s Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources requirements for service dogs. The dog must be trained to provide assistance to a person with a disability. Visitors are not allowed to bring emotional support animals into the Museum.
No Smoking
The interior of the Museum is a no-smoking free zone.
No Food or Drinks in Exhibits
Food and beverages may not be consumed in gallery areas except for designated areas. Please inquire at the first-floor Reception Desk for designated areas.
Photography
You are welcome to take photos for personal use (and share them on Instagram with #moaelizcity). However, tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks are not permitted without prior approval. For professionals, please contact (252) 335-1453 or email moa@ncdcr.gov for appointments and info.
