Jon Stull, a retired Marine and member of the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways History Foundation, will discuss the 1775 Battle of Great Bridge, Virginia. The lecture will highlight Brigadier General William Skinner (1728-1798) of Perquimans County, who served in the American Revolution during the battle.
After many severe storms, this coastal area is used to picking up the pieces and putting itself back together in order to return to "business as usual." In the first week of September 1775, a major storm slammed into the Carolinas and rolled up the East Coast, which changed the region forever. The events and decisions made in the wake of the Hurricane of Independence put the region on an unforeseen path to self-defense, self-government, and ultimately independence. Discover how Lord Dunmore (the last Royal Governor of Virginia) lost the Old Dominion and the British lost control of the inland waterways of the Chesapeake Bay and the Carolina sounds.
No RSVP required if you plan to attend in person.
