Crossroads: Country Stores in the Albemarle Region Art Contest

We invite students to submit their original artwork depicting active or former country stores that are/were vital to your community's cultural and economic aspects.

All entries are to be done as a photograph, painting, or drawing in 11-inch x 14-inch format on paper, canvas, or photo paper. 3-dimensional artwork will not be accepted. 

Competition Levels are as follows:

  • 4 - 5th grade
  • 6 - 8th grade
  • 9 - 12th grade
  • College/University

Winners in each level will receive a cash prize and ribbon for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards. Artistic criteria are based on technique, originality, and theme. Please include a brief written statement about the store's role/history in your community along with your name, teacher's name, grade, and school. This will be attached to the entries. Please provide an email address and phone number for notification. 

Deadline to submit entries: 5 p.m. on January 13, 2023. Juror selections will be announced at 4 p.m. on January 25, 2023.

Crossroads: Change in Rural America, a Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit on display January 24 - March 8, 2023. This exhibit was made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council and the Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle.
